History
In 1968 the question was "What can we do with all those teens hanging out on
the street in the Near Eastside of Indianapolis?" Concerned Christian people
wanted to influence them for good and evangelize them to Christ. Incorporated
in 1970, AYM was established for religious, educational, and charitable purposes.
When the work started, there was a director and a staff of volunteers. There
was no central location until a board was formed. Business offices were established
on East 10th Street, with workers involved chiefly in "street work," making
contacts with the wandering youth in the alleys, near taverns, and on street
corners. When sufficient funds had been secured, AYM moved to an older home
in Woodruff Place, near the entrance to Tech High School. Youth
began to frequent the place, as they knew it was a safe haven from disruptive,
unsavory influences. The area has deteriorated through the years, with a high
presence of drug dealers
and some gangs. In 1985, the staff moved to AYM's current location at the corner
of State and Michigan, combining the business offices and the Drop-In Center.
AYM purchased the building and owns it, free and clear. Volunteers from the
business community, with donated materials, renovated the structure. An Indianapolis
Foundation grant provided an adjacent community park, with a basketball and
volleyball court. This location is also across from an entrance to Tech High
School.
