Young
Champions
Young Champions is a dynamic program that reaches out to more than 500 at-risk
youth in seven Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) middle schools and
high schools. This program teaches life skills based on Biblical principles
through a 25-week curriculum. One-to-one mentoring sessions during
the course expand the opportunity for influence, while after-school activities
and major events open the door to spiritual influence.
Goal
The goal of Young Champions is to use life skills and character education to
encourage and empower at-risk middle school and high school students to take
advantage of the educational opportunities offered to them and excel in their
lives.
Objectives
- Young Champions' students will learn the importance of
developing and using good verbal, non-verbal and written
communication skills.
- Young Champions' students will learn the importance of
making positive choices when faced with peer pressure in
the areas of, but not limited to: drug and alcohol use, gangs
and violence, and sex before marriage.
- Young Champions' students will learn the importance of
maintaining a good grade point average and will develop the
necessary skills to continue their good grades.
- Young Champions' students will learn the importance of
maintaining a good attendance record and will develop the
necessary personal determination to continue to improve their
attendance record.
- Young Champions' students will learn the importance of
not becoming a discipline problem and will develop the necessary
discipline to continue proper behavior.
- Young Champions' students will learn the importance of
submitting to authority of their parents/guardians, teachers,
school administrators, and other adults who have their best
interest at heart and will develop the necessary skills to
interact with persons of authority.
- Young Champions' students will learn the importance of
developing and maintaining healthy relationships with their
parents/guardians, siblings and other family members, teachers
and school administrators, law enforcement officers, ministers,
and others in the community who have their best interest
at heart and will develop the necessary skills to conduct
healthy relationships.
- Young Champions' students will develop an improved attitude
toward effort, accomplishment, and ethical lifestyle through
their class discussions and experiential learning.
